1      It's midnight, and as by the hearth
The fading embers glow, And visions they come unto me,
Of scenes that come and go. Of Europe and her mighty war,
In battle's fierce array. Then sheathe the sword, bring forth the plow,
For peace this autumn day.
2      The homes we loved have been destroyed,
It's lonesome everywhere. The one who was our main support,
Has left us in despair, For we have bade that last good-bye,
And clasped that gentle hand. His body's in an unknown grave,
In a distant far off land.
3      And Belgium, that little land,
You were noble, just and true, You stood for home and sweethearts And friends so dear to you,
